Section 396.17 does not specific where you need to place your usdot number sticker decal. It is the responsibility of the driver or business to produce the documentation when requested. This means the driver must know the location of the decal sticker to ensure that all information is legible and current.
A few tips to remember,
Your USDOT & other lettering must be
2 inches in height (visible from a distance of 50 feet)
Must be placed on both sides and easy to read (color must contrast)
